Happy Thanksgiving

From: Barbara A. Carson

Subject: Happy Thanksgiving

Dear Mrs. Lee and Everyone at Queens Lutheran School,

We hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving with family and friends.

Part of our Thanksgiving prayer was to give thanks to QLS -- to all of you
for creating such a warm and loving school for Gabriel and all of your
students. We are truly blessed, and bless you for all that you do.
Conversation around the dining room table tonight included my telling
family about QLS: the International Luncheon, the caring, the great
learning and support. We topped off our delicious meal with pies from
QLS--the perfect ending to a great day.

May God bless each and every one of you and hold you special in His heart
for all you do throughout the year.

With all of our love,

Barbara, Gabriel, Adam, and Grandma

Tuition Due by the 10th

Dear Parent or Guardian: The following letter was mailed to you on Thursday, November 12, 2009

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On Tuesday, November 10, 2009, the Queens Lutheran School board voted to change the date of the last payment of the month to the 10th instead of the 20th. This payment schedule will begin the month of December. Late payment after the 10th will include a $35 late charge. As you know Queens Lutheran School relies strictly on tuition income to run the school. The school's expenses are salaries, benefits, utilities, and rent.

The school board, faculty and administration are asking you to be diligent in paying on time.

Thanking you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

Thanksgiving International Luncheon

Queens Lutheran School
Thanksgiving International Luncheon
Tuesday, November 24, 2009

November, 2009

Dear Parent/Guardian:

We are celebrating Thanksgiving in a BIG way by having our 12th Annual International Luncheon on Tuesday, November 24, 2009.

Students interested in wearing clothing from their ethnic background may do so. Please note: If your child does not choose to wear ethnic clothes, he/she must wear the school uniform.

To make this day a complete success, we do need your help and support. We're asking each child to bring in any food item from his/her ethnic background. If you are not preparing a native dish and would like to provide us with a food item, here are some suggestions: cranberry sauce, sweet potato pie, canned fruits, potato salad, yams, corn and always meat (ham, chicken cutlets, chicken, turkey, pot roast, roast beef, roast veal etc.) We ask you to send in as much food as you can because the children will eat this for their lunch. They do not bring lunch in on this day.  Please send in dishes already cooked and heated or send in a dish that does not require heating.. This is necessary due to a lack of space to heat every dish brought in. Please send food in disposable pans because we cannot be responsible for returning your dish.

We are asking each child to provide his/her own drink. Please do not send in any glass bottles. Cans or soft cardboard cartons will be greatly appreciated. We have sodas in our machines which the children can buy for $1.00. We would like to feed 55 students, 10 staff members and our volunteer parents or guardians.

We have invited the Senior members of Trinity and Grace Lutheran Church and other key people to be our guests. Won't you please be so kind as to send in some bottled soda, holiday napkins, cups and plates for approximately 40 guests for our guest table. We do not need any other paper products as we have some left over from our last International Luncheon and our last children's party.

Please fill in and return the attached sheet and return it to your child's teacher as soon as possible but no later than Tuesday, November 17, 2009.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Bettye J. Lee
Principal

School supplies and deals on the web

There are a few ways to save a few dollars on school supplies, computers and more on the web.

Dealnews is an excellent website for all shopping on the web and even in stores. It brings together all the latest deals, including coupons, in one place.

Discovercard offers cash back on all purchases from stores that take the card (most do). By using the Shop Discover section of their website the savings (along with any coupons you come across in Dealnews) can add up to quite a bit.

First Day of School 1st & 2nd

September, 2009

Dear Parent or Guardian:

Greetings! Welcome to the QLS family and our class! I hope you and your child are ready for a year filled with exciting things to do and many things to learn.

This year beginners will learn to read and returning students will continue the study of Reading in hopes of becoming confident independent readers. The phonics he/she will learn, will help in the study of Spelling, English, Creative Writing and all other school work. Learning to read requires practice and lots of it. I ask that you sit down with your child each evening and read together. Read to your child, then let your child read to you.

For beginners, this is a time to develop basic learning skills that will pave the way for future learning. For returning students, this is a time of transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." Our other subjects include, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Religion, Art, Music, Handwriting, Computers, Foreign Language and Physical Education.

Your child will receive Homework each night. Homework is a review or practice of material covered in class. Students will copy assignments in their notebooks daily. I will check to see that assignments are completed and neat. Assist your child by checking and explaining things they are not sure of, but DO NOT do the work for them.

Here is a list of supplies your child will need this year:
Pencils
Pencil Case - soft sided with a zipper, not a box, please
Eraser
2 Extra Large Bookcovers - the cloth stretch kind
Bookbag
Sneakers
2 Folders with pockets
Marble Notebook
Daily Notebook ($1.00 will be purchased at class bookstore)
Sneaker Sack - (a mesh lingerie laundry bag just large enough to hold a pair of sneakers works well)
Scissors - Fiskers are a good brand (have a pair at home also, for homework)
Glue - 4 oz. Elmer’s School Glue
a box of 24 Crayola Crayons
Squirt bottle of liquid soap
Large box of tissues

ALL SUPPLIES MUST BE CLEARLY LABELED WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME!!!

FOLDER - A school folder is supplied by Q.L.S.

BOOK COVERS - The HARDCOVER BOOKS MUST BE COVERED. (Please use the stretchy cloth type cover-they last all year.) If you use paper, be sure the cover forms flaps inside the books so that the cover doesn’t come off when the book is opened. DO NOT USE TAPE OR CONTACT ON THE BOOK AS THIS CAUSES DAMAGE!!!

UNIFORMS - The School uniform must be worn each day. Check the Q.L.S. Parent/Student Handbook for the Dress Code. QLS Sweat Suit may be worn every Friday.

ABSENCE - For each absence from school, a note from a parent/guardian must be sent in. For extended absences, a doctor’s note must accompany the child upon his/her return to school. If your child has a health problem or allergies that I should be aware of, please send me a note.

LATENESS - Students go to their classroom at 8:15 a.m. Classes begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. Any child arriving in the classroom after 8:30 a.m. must go to the office and get a late slip. If your child arrives before 8:15 a.m., a teacher will be on duty in the blue room. Dismissal is a 2:30 p.m. If your pickup is delayed or there is a change kindly drop me a note and call the school office.

MONIES - There will be times when you will be sending monies to school with your child. (Book club, trip, tickets, lunch, etc.) BE SURE ALL MONIES ARE IN AN ENVELOPE!!! Clearly mark the front of the envelope with your child’s name, grade and purpose of the monies. Do not combine monies-use separate envelopes for Pizza, Hot Dogs, Books Club, etc. Loose monies can not be accepted!

PARTIES /BIRTHDAYS - We will be having several parties for holidays - more news about that at a later date. If you wish to celebrate your child’s birthday in school, please let me know the week before so I can set aside time. Individual servings are best - e.g. cupcakes, donuts. A parent or another adult should come to assist with serving and clean up.
PTA - The PTA will be recruiting class parents shortly. Our class needs two parents to help at parties, go on trips, help with paperwork, make telephone calls, etc. If you can be of assistance, please contact me.
I think that’s enough for one letter! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at the school, 718.721.4313 or send an e-mail, info@queenslutheranschool.com. I’m looking forward to a good year, I trust you are too!

Yours in Christ,

Deanna J. Gigler

P.S. We’ll be having a "Back to School Night" soon. At that time you will receive details about our curriculum and classroom procedures. You’ll also get to meet other parents. Hope to see you then. Check the school’s Monthly Calendar, distributed to your child once a month. The calendar can be viewed on our Web Page... www.queenslutheranschool.com

A Message from Pastor James Klockau

Dear Friends in Christ:

It is my great joy to greet you as the new pastor of Grace Church. Grace has been without a regular pastor for what must seem like a long time, especially to those who bore the burden of leadership during the vacancy. But all things happen in God's time, and God's time is the very best time. I am looking forward to our time together which begins now. Please join us for a celebration on Friday, June 26th at 7:00 p.m., when I will be officially "installed" as pastor. The Rev. Leo Longan, who served so well as vacancy pastor, will be the preacher and representative of the synod at the installation.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself so that you can get to know me. I am a "P.K." - a pastor's kid. My father is a retired pastor living in Kansas City, Missouri, where I was raised. My mother is a former Lutheran school teacher. I was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1963 , where my parents were serving as missionaries of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. I have two sisters and one brother scattered around the country. I attended Lutheran elementary school, public high school, and Dartmouth College. During college I was active in the Lutheran campus ministry and began to discern a call to ordained ministry. I entered the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and received my M. Div. in 1989. My first call was to Augustana Church in East Elmhurst, just down the road from Grace, and I served there for eight years. In 1997 I was called to serve Grace Church and School of Malverne, on Long Island, where I have been for the last eleven and a half years.

My decision to leave Malverne and come to Astoria was not an easy one. I have been very satisfied and comfortable there, but sometimes God asks us to leave our comfort zone to take on a new challenge. That challenge has come to me by way of our Metropolitan New York Synod. Bishop Robert Rimbo and our synod have made a significant financial commitment to this place so that we can maintain and grow a visible Lutheran presence in Astoria, especially in the Christian education we provide to children and families from Nursery through Eighth Grade. I am passionate about the ministry of Lutheran schools, and I am excited to welcome our school families into this community of faith in Jesus Christ.

I want to honor the work of those who have come before me in this office, and I especially thank all the loyal leaders of Grace who have kept the faith in trying times. Together we will remain faithful to the Lord of the church, and through the power of the Holy Spirit God's work will be accomplished through our hands. God's Work, Our Hands - the mission of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

I look forward greeting you in church!

REMINDERS

Dear Parent or Guardian:

The children are excited about their upcoming environmental camping trip.  They are looking forward to this trip and can't stop talking about it.  You may also enjoy a little quiet time while your son/daughter is away at camp.  It will give you a little time to go out to dinner or a movie without the worry about getting a sitter.

Ms. Costanzo, Mr. Busch, are going as well as our former counselor, Dr. Ralph Peters and a couple of our parents are going.  As always, the children will be chaperoned at all times.  They sleep in cabins, not tents and an adult will sleep in the same cabin with them.  Male adult with the boys of course and female with the girls.

Thank you for allowing them to go and be prepared to hear for days everything they did while at camp.

If you would like your son or daughter to go on this camping trip, you're still in time to send in the required forms along with the fee.

Regards,

Bettye J. Lee, Principal

BASEBALL

Calling all Yankee and Mets fans - and anyone who enjoys America's pastime...

This spring the Lutheran Schools Association is offering two opportunities to see professional baseball.  Not only will both fundraisers help LSA fulfill its mission "to serve, support and represent your ministries" as you provide quality Christ-centered education, but they offer a nice day (weather is out of our hands) at the ballpark with your family, friends, and other Lutheran schools and churches.  You get to sit with people who believe in Christian education - teachers, staff, parents, children, pastors, church members!

The deadline to order tickets for both events is April 30.

NY Mets vs. FL Marlins ~ Saturday, May 30, 1:10pm at Citi Field.

Highlights:             See the NEW stadium everyone is talking about: great food, the newly dedicated Jackie Robinson Rotunda, and a marvelous view of the field from every seat.

The 2K Sports FanFest is fun for the whole family, including Mr. Met's Kiddie Field (a scaled version of Citi Field), batting cage, base running challenge, dunk tank, video game kiosks and more!

SI Yankees ~ Sunday, June 28 at 4pm at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.  Info also attached

Highlights:           You will receive a check from LSA reflecting $2 for every ticket your school sells.

The class which sells the most tickets will be given a VIP tour of the ballpark before the game.
