LSA kudos to...

1.       St John Lutheran School in Glendale for selling the MOST tickets to this past Saturday's game at Citi Field - 81.

2.       Runners-up: Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Seaford (65); Ascension Lutheran Church, Deer Park (60); Queens Lutheran School, Astoria (57) and Trinity Lutheran School, Hicksville (56)

3.       The following Lutheran churches for supporting LSA even though they do not have schools of their own: All Saints Lutheran Church, Jamaica (11); Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church, Manhattan (44); St Luke's Lutheran Church, Manhattan (20); and Atonement Lutheran Church, Stony Point (2).  We love you!

4.       Our Saviour, Rego Park (42); St David's Christian PS, Massapequa Park (16); Good Shepherd Lutheran School, Plainview (39); Redeemer Lutheran Church, Queens Village (39); The Lutheran School of Flushing & Bayside (29); Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School, Brookville (14); St Mark's Lutheran School, Brooklyn (31); Leif Ericson Day School, Brooklyn (11); St Mark's Lutheran School, Yonkers (12); Grace Lutheran Church, Uniondale (24); Emanuel Lutheran School, Patchogue (20); Epiphany Lutheran School, Brooklyn (7); and The Chapel School/Village Lutheran Church, Bronxville (45) - for selling, coming, and supporting LSA!

5.       The New York Mets for discounting our tickets this year.  It's been several years since they've "chipped in" to assist our fundraising efforts.  They gave us $3/ticket and we added a dollar to round up cost to $20 - LSA's profit was $4 per ticket sold.

6.       Jim Dhyne for being LSA's liaison to the New York Mets sales department, and handling the ticket orders.  When he and I chose the date back in January, we thought last year's count of 550 may have been thanks to the new stadium, and so hoped to fill only 300 seats.  But you all proved us wrong!  We more than doubled that count and ended up at 732 - the largest crowd in years!  (Can we reach 1000 next year? J)

Great weather (okay, it was a little hot and humid), a fast-paced game, and a Mets win helped round out a perfect LSA event!

Please convey our sincere thanks to your school and church families!

Hope to see more of you next year!

Blessings,
Debbie

---

Dear Friends,

I am involved with two organizations that distribute used backpacks - any size, color or condition - to children and adults in need. Midnight Run is a volunteer organization dedicated to finding common ground between the housed and the homeless.  Every 4-6 weeks I travel with about a dozen teens and adults into Manhattan to feed, clothe, and provide other items (toiletries, caps, blankets, used but not abused backpacks, paperbacks) to men and women living on the streets.  While the food and materials are much-needed, it is the conversation and personal interaction which are most appreciated by our recipients.  It is an extraordinary experience - I never return unmoved.

I have also been to the Thorpe House in the Bronx.  It is one of two residence facilities sponsored by The Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, with a primary goal of providing care for those homeless women and children seeking to develop life skills in preparation for independent living.  The Thorpe Family Residence has been described as an "extremely effective grass roots group that provides crucial services to mothers and children at risk."

As we end this school year, I thought it a good time to ask if your school would be willing to help me collect backpacks that students will discard after this school year.  If you have families planning to purchase backpacks for September, would you please ask them to donate the old one(s) in whatever condition (we will repair) to be shared with the less fortunate in our midst?

Homeless adults are always looking for backpacks, an easy way to tote their belongings.  The children who live at Thorpe House typically range in age from toddler to 10 years of age.  They attend school and also need backpacks.

If you are able to participate, we can pick up collected items. Just let me know! Thank you!

Peace,
Debbie
