Terra Nova Tests

Dear Parent or Guardian:

The Terra Nova Tests will be administered next week to students in grade 1 - 8. We suggest that your son/daughter gets to bed early and has a healthy breakfast the next day. Hopefully we'll have 100% attendance every day so that everyone will take the test and not worry about a remake.

The Terra Nova test shows your child's strengths and weaknesses. The weaknesses could reflect that your child did not understand or that part of the curriculum was never taught. This test is a measuring rod for the teacher. It shows the teacher in what area your child needs more preparation and help.

This test does not test your child's I.Q. and it does not tell you how smart he/she is. Please don't look at it that way.

Spread the word about Queens Lutheran School

One of the best ways to help support Queens Lutheran School is to spread the word.

On the home page of the Queens Lutheran School website, at the bottom, are icons to share the school website with Google Buzz, Facebook and Twitter. It's easy enough to share the website by email, too. That function is built into every web browser.

In the QLS Weblog, below every post, there's a row of icons: email, Blogger, Twitter, Facebook and Google Buzz.

In the QLS Photo Albums there's share icons, too. You can share the pictures by email, Google Buzz, Blogger and Twitter. You can also download pictures and order prints (and all sorts of things).

You can share the QLS Calendar and QLS News and Notes, too. These functions are built in to the website. You can share the information in any other way you'd like. The point is to spread the word.

Of course, if you have anything you'd like to share with the school please send it in. You can use your email program or the form on the Contact QLS page.

If you have a website, a weblog, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, or any other site of your own please consider adding a Queens Lutheran School link. It all helps to get the message out.

New school year - old computer...

As inexpensive as a new PC can be these days there's no need to toss out an older computer when it can easily be "refreshed". If you have an older Windows XP computer it may not be possible or practical to upgrade it to a newer version of Windows. These older computers work well with Ubuntu Linux, an alternative operating system that comes with all the applications you might ever need. Ubuntu Linux is free!

Ubuntu is not Windows. It's an entirely different system. So, any old Windows software will not work. However, you can install Ubuntu so that it works with Windows so you have the best of both. If you can give up the old Windows system for new, then you can install Ubuntu and start fresh. It's like getting a new computer for free. If you're not sure about Ubuntu, you can download it, burn a CD, and give it a try before committing to it. You can also order a free CD from Ubuntu if your CD drive is shot.

Ubuntu is very easy to learn. Ubuntu sets itself up. Everything you need is on the menus on the top left. Ubuntu comes with Firefox and OpenOffice (a Microsoft Office equivalent). I suggest using Google Docs, instead (you'll need a free Google account - if you're using Gmail, you have Google Docs).

Much of what we do these days is web based. Ubuntu is very secure. There's no worries about computer viruses  and spyware - Linux systems (much like Mac's) don't have this problem.

One hidden "gem" is that Ubuntu can rescue files from an infected PC. Start a Windows computer from an Ubuntu CD and it can "see" your Windows files and you can copy them to a safe location. If you've ever had to reload an old Windows XP based PC you know how long and tedious this can be - if you have or can find the disks.

So, what's the catch? None other than not being able to run Windows based software and games and a little readjustment. Applications have different names but work pretty much the same. You won't be able to run AOL's software (does anyone still use that software when you can just go to the AOL website?). iPod's can also be quirky but iTunes is meant for more modern computers. Yes, Facebook will still work, as will Twitter. Those are web based.

If you have an older PC, give Ubuntu a try.

Website update...

With the new school year coming it's time to do a little website updating and cleanup. New this year is a change to the QLS News and Notes section of the website. All News and Notes, and Forms are now in Google Docs to make it easier for you to read, download and print.

Older weblog entries pointing to news, notes and forms may no longer work due to this change.

Praise For Queens School - Queens Gazette, July 7, 2010

Praise For Queens School

To The Editor:

I would like to write on behalf of the Queens Lutheran School in Astoria.

I am a mother of three children. All my children went to Queens Lutheran School, located at 31-20 21st Ave. in Astoria, and attended the school from nursery through eighth grade. It is very rare to find a school that is academically up to par with incredible staff, but I found that at Queens Lutheran School. I write today to give back to the school for what it has given to my children. Christopher, my oldest child, has a Bachelors Degree in Zoo Science and is continuing his education towards a Masters Degree. My daughter Stephanie is going into her second year of college and is pursuing the same as Christopher. My son Nicholas just got accepted to CCNY’s Honor Program and was accepted to several other schools, all of which accepted him into the honors program as well. He is pursuing International Affairs and his goal is to become an Ambassador. I believe he will accomplish that goal thanks to the support and education he was given, as well as the leadership qualities brought out in him, at Queens Lutheran School.

The first years of a child’s life are the most important in molding them for who they are and what they will become. Queens Lutheran School was my children’s stepping stone, their molding process. Queens Lutheran School has dedicated teachers and staff who show compassion, love and understanding to their students. The school brought out the best in all my children and showed them that no task, dream or life encounter is too big to attain. I feel the education and guidance that my children received there enabled them to become the confident, happy, successful people they are today.

I would recommend this school to any parent who is looking for excellence in academics and leadership as well as compassion and dedication. Queens Lutheran’s teachers and staff possess all of these qualities. On behalf of the Scoufaras family, I want to thank you for all you did and all you do at Queens Lutheran School.

LSA kudos to...

1.       St John Lutheran School in Glendale for selling the MOST tickets to this past Saturday's game at Citi Field - 81.

2.       Runners-up: Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Seaford (65); Ascension Lutheran Church, Deer Park (60); Queens Lutheran School, Astoria (57) and Trinity Lutheran School, Hicksville (56)

3.       The following Lutheran churches for supporting LSA even though they do not have schools of their own: All Saints Lutheran Church, Jamaica (11); Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church, Manhattan (44); St Luke's Lutheran Church, Manhattan (20); and Atonement Lutheran Church, Stony Point (2).  We love you!

4.       Our Saviour, Rego Park (42); St David's Christian PS, Massapequa Park (16); Good Shepherd Lutheran School, Plainview (39); Redeemer Lutheran Church, Queens Village (39); The Lutheran School of Flushing & Bayside (29); Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School, Brookville (14); St Mark's Lutheran School, Brooklyn (31); Leif Ericson Day School, Brooklyn (11); St Mark's Lutheran School, Yonkers (12); Grace Lutheran Church, Uniondale (24); Emanuel Lutheran School, Patchogue (20); Epiphany Lutheran School, Brooklyn (7); and The Chapel School/Village Lutheran Church, Bronxville (45) - for selling, coming, and supporting LSA!

5.       The New York Mets for discounting our tickets this year.  It's been several years since they've "chipped in" to assist our fundraising efforts.  They gave us $3/ticket and we added a dollar to round up cost to $20 - LSA's profit was $4 per ticket sold.

6.       Jim Dhyne for being LSA's liaison to the New York Mets sales department, and handling the ticket orders.  When he and I chose the date back in January, we thought last year's count of 550 may have been thanks to the new stadium, and so hoped to fill only 300 seats.  But you all proved us wrong!  We more than doubled that count and ended up at 732 - the largest crowd in years!  (Can we reach 1000 next year? J)

Great weather (okay, it was a little hot and humid), a fast-paced game, and a Mets win helped round out a perfect LSA event!

Please convey our sincere thanks to your school and church families!

Hope to see more of you next year!

Blessings,
Debbie

---

Dear Friends,

I am involved with two organizations that distribute used backpacks - any size, color or condition - to children and adults in need. Midnight Run is a volunteer organization dedicated to finding common ground between the housed and the homeless.  Every 4-6 weeks I travel with about a dozen teens and adults into Manhattan to feed, clothe, and provide other items (toiletries, caps, blankets, used but not abused backpacks, paperbacks) to men and women living on the streets.  While the food and materials are much-needed, it is the conversation and personal interaction which are most appreciated by our recipients.  It is an extraordinary experience - I never return unmoved.

I have also been to the Thorpe House in the Bronx.  It is one of two residence facilities sponsored by The Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, with a primary goal of providing care for those homeless women and children seeking to develop life skills in preparation for independent living.  The Thorpe Family Residence has been described as an "extremely effective grass roots group that provides crucial services to mothers and children at risk."

As we end this school year, I thought it a good time to ask if your school would be willing to help me collect backpacks that students will discard after this school year.  If you have families planning to purchase backpacks for September, would you please ask them to donate the old one(s) in whatever condition (we will repair) to be shared with the less fortunate in our midst?

Homeless adults are always looking for backpacks, an easy way to tote their belongings.  The children who live at Thorpe House typically range in age from toddler to 10 years of age.  They attend school and also need backpacks.

If you are able to participate, we can pick up collected items. Just let me know! Thank you!

Peace,
Debbie
